ATV Trail Closure at Grave Ridge
The Grave Ridge section of the ATV trail system will be closed beginning Monday, July 6, 2020, due to active timber harvesting. Closures are at intersections 3 and 6. This section will reopen when harvesting operations are complete.
Please see the Grave Ridge Closure Map (PDF) for a detailed view of the affected area. If you have questions regarding the trail closure, please contact the Michaux State Forest district office.
Procedure to Accommodate Camping Permits Under Phased District Reopening
Remote application by email is the preferred method for accommodating permit requests through the summer of 2020.
Procedure:
- Send an email to the
Michaux State Forest district office requesting information.
- The district will send information necessary to award the permit to the patron.
- Patron supplies required information. Permit is processed, scanned, and emailed back to the patron.
- Patron must have a printed copy of the permit or be able to produce an image on their phone as requested by DCNR staff.
Chronic Wasting Disease
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which is an always fatal disease to deer and elk, has been detected in all, or portions, of the Michaux State Forest.
Hunters should be aware of special rules and regulations that apply to deer harvested within the Disease Management Area (DMA). It is recommended that those deer be tested for the disease.
More information about CWD can be found on the
Pennsylvania Game Commission and the
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture websites. In addition, the Pennsylvania Game Commission provides information about
deer processors in the DMA.
Don’t Move Firewood
To help protect the forest from invasive insects that can kill trees and devastate the ecosystem, please do not transport firewood over long distances.
Firewood can harbor insects such as emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly. Cut or purchase your firewood where you intend to burn it.
Cumberland County, which comprises part of the Michaux State Forest District, is under the spotted lanternfly (SLF) quarantine order. The order restricts movement of certain items -- like firewood -- into and out of the county. For more information, please see the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture website.
