ATV Riding in Michaux State Forest

Michaux State Forest maintains over 30 miles of designated summer and over 40 miles of designated winter ATV trails.

Michaux ATV Trails are open from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Some ATV trails reopen for winter use the third Sunday following Thanksgiving until April 1. 

Trails can be accessed from the Big Flat Parking Area (1975 Birch Run Road, Biglerville PA 17307) and the Piney Mountain Parking Area (1721 Bendersville Road, Gardeners, PA 17324).

Rules and Regulations

  • ATVs are restricted to Class 1 (less than 50 inches wide and 1,200 pounds).
  • ATVs must be insured, registered with DCNR, and comply with other regulations. 
  • Riders must wear a U.S. Department of Transportation approved helmet. 
  • ATVs are not permitted on Michaux State Forest roads
  • Motorcycles and trailbikes are not permitted on ATV trails. 
  • Children under the age of 8 are not permitted to operate ATVs on state forest lands.
  • Between ages 8 and 16, completion of a DCNR-approved ATV safety course is required to operate an ATV on state forest land.
  • Children between ages 8 and 9 are restricted to an engine size of 70cc or less.
