Colonel Denning State Park is close to three state parks and one state forest, where visitors can enjoy recreation, education, and other activities.

Little Buffalo State Park

Little Buffalo State Park is located in Perry County. Thousands of people meet at Little Buffalo every year to picnic, swim, fish, hike, and experience nature and history. The park has 8 miles of trails for a wide range of physical abilities.

The main picnic area near the swimming pool features showers, first-aid station, play field, seasonal food concession, playground equipment, boat rental, two picnic pavilions that each seat 80 people, horseshoe pits, restrooms, and many picnic tables.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park

The 696-acre Pine Grove Furnace State Park is steeped in natural and historical features. It is located at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in an area known as South Mountain.

Visitors enjoy many recreational opportunities, including the two mountain lakes (Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake), hiking the Appalachian Trail, biking the rail trail, and visiting the Appalachian Trail Museum.

Fowlers Hollow State Park

The 104-acre Fowlers Hollow State Park is located in a narrow valley created by Fowler Hollow Run.

Fowlers Hollow State Park is a trailhead for a variety of hiking trails within, and connecting to, the extensive trail system in Tuscarora State Forest.
Other recreational activities include mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, fishing, hunting, and camping.

Tuscarora State Forest

The 96,025-acre Tuscarora State Forest covers the narrow valleys and steep, rocky ridges of the ridge and valley region of Pennsylvania. These fertile, well-watered sites are ideal for growing majestic oak and hemlock forests.

Recreational activities in Tuscarora State Forest includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, boating, fishing, hunting, and camping.

Other Nearby Outdoor Spaces and Natural Places

State Game Lands 169 is located between PA Routes 641 and 997, about 10 miles southwest of the park, several thousand acres of State Game Lands 169 are primarily managed for upland game animals and deer.

About 20 miles south east of the park along PA 944 is State Game Lands 230; consisting of trails, deer, turkey, small game hunting opportunities, and shooting ranges.
